Health and Safety Courses Running in Birmingham

Working Out Who Needs Which Certificate

Start with who does what, rather than with a catalogue.

Operatives on a construction site need the one day CITB health and safety site awareness course
Supervisors need SSSTS over two days, then a one day SSSTS refresher to carry it on for another five years
Site managers need SMSTS. It runs as five consecutive days, or as five single days spread across as many weeks, and a two day refresher keeps it valid
IOSH Managing Safely, three days, is the one for managers and senior staff away from site
Anyone going into a tank, chamber or pit needs confined space entry, one day, or two days where breathing apparatus is involved
Asbestos awareness, three hours, covers anyone whose work could disturb the fabric of an older building

How many trained first aiders you keep is a separate question, and the answer comes out of your own first aid needs assessment under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 rather than a figure somebody quoted you.

The Date on the Certificate Is a Deadline

Certificates run out, and nobody looks at the date until a main contractor asks to see the card. Two of ours have renewal rules worth knowing before that happens. The SSSTS refresher renews the qualification for a further five years, but the delegate has to be holding an unexpired SSSTS certificate on the day. Let it lapse and the one day refresher is closed to them, so the full two day course has to be sat again. First aid is tighter still. That refresher has to be completed no more than twenty eight days after the previous certificate expired, and past the window it is back to the three day course.

Getting a Whole Team Through Without Stopping the Job

Nobody can spare everybody at once. Work backwards from the expiry dates you already hold, put the people whose certificates go first into the earliest dates, then spread the rest over two or three months so somebody qualified is always on shift. The five week version of SMSTS exists for the same reason, because losing a manager for one day a week is easier to absorb than losing them for a solid week. Ask about running a course on your own site as well, because we can sometimes do that where the numbers work.

Asbestos Awareness and Confined Space Entry

Asbestos awareness covers where asbestos turns up in buildings, the health effects, working with an asbestos register and what the management duty involves. Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 requires adequate information, instruction and training for anyone liable to disturb it. This is one of the courses taught at Wolverhampton, so check the location on the course page before you book.

Confined space entry does run in Birmingham. The Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 are the law behind it, and the day covers hazard identification, gas detection, permits to work, oxygen escape sets and emergency procedures. Delegates leave with a certificate and a photo identity card.

Face fit testing is a different thing again. What we teach is the train the trainer course, so one of your own people can carry out the fit tests in house.
