SafeWise look after health and safety for smaller businesses around Derby and across Derbyshire. We act as your external competent person, carry out your risk assessments and audits, keep your policies current, and get you through whichever accreditation a customer has asked you to hold. We have been at this since 2012.
What Is an External Competent Person?
Every employer has to appoint at least one competent person to help meet their health and safety duties, however small the business is. That duty sits in Regulation 7 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. The regulation does not say that person has to be on your payroll. Appointing an external adviser is the normal route for a business that needs the expertise without the cost of a full time safety manager, and it is what most of our Derby clients use us for.
Risk Assessments and Safety Audits
Two things Derby businesses ask for by name. Your advisor writes risk assessments and method statements around the work you actually do, rather than handing over a generic set that falls apart the first time somebody reads it properly. We also run interim audits of your management systems and documentation, so you find the gaps before a client, an insurer or an inspector does.
What You Get for Your Money
- Risk assessments and method statements written around the jobs you actually take on
- Interim audits of your systems and paperwork, so gaps surface before a client finds them
- Safety inspections at your offices, yard, factory floor or sites
- Fire risk assessments for the premises you occupy
- A health and safety policy that gets reviewed, rather than written once and filed
- Legislation sessions for your directors, managers and supervisors, included at no extra cost
- A straight answer on which certificates your people are legally required to hold
- One advisor who knows your business, on the phone as often as you need
CHAS, SMAS and Safecontractor Accreditation
Derby businesses search for accreditation by name more than anywhere else we cover, which usually means a main contractor has asked for it. We put the submission together, evidence and all, for whichever scheme you are going for, and deal with the assessor when the queries come back. That covers CHAS, SMAS, Safecontractor, Constructionline, CQMS and Altius. More on our safety accreditation support.
Training and Certificates
Training is where most businesses find a gap, and it usually surfaces when a client asks to see certificates. Your advisor works out what your people are legally required to hold and what is simply nice to have. Legislation sessions for directors, managers and supervisors come with the membership, and there are classroom courses and an online platform for everything else.
Cover is bought as a membership. Health and safety on its own, or with HR alongside it and an advisor for each. If the people side needs sorting too, see our HR consultancy in Derby.
