The HSE suggested in their summary of statistics for Great Britain 2022 that around 12,000 of the 13,000 deaths due to lung diseases are linked to past exposures at work. Evidence suggests that there are 19,000 new cases of breathing or lung problems caused or made worse every year for the last 3 years (according to the Labour Force Survey).
See below which lung diseases are contributing to current annual deaths-
- Mesothelioma- 20%
- Asbestos related lung cancer- 20%
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)- 34%
- Non-asbestos related lung cancer- 23%
- Other disease- 3%
Who is at risk?
Some of the workers who are most likely to receive occupational lung diseases are construction workers, factory workers, electricians, plumbers, and welders. The most dangerous thing about occupational lung disease is that symptoms can take many years to surface and are often misdiagnosed in early stages. Patients suffering stop responding to treatment and are then diagnosed late. If patients can be diagnosed early enough, they are able to explore better treatment options.
How can occupational lung disease be prevented?
Avoiding exposure to contaminated environments and harmful materials is important for employee safety. The COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002) states that employers are required to advise workers of the risks around exposure and provide resources to prevent exposure. Where this is not ‘reasonably practicable’ exposure must be adequately controlled. Employers are also required to make sure methods of prevention are used properly by instructing, training and supervising workers.
