Buckingham Palace has confirmed that the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, and the Queen Consort, will take place on Saturday 6th May 2023, at Westminster Abbey, London.
Therefore, the government has announced that Monday 8th May 2023 will be a national bank holiday throughout the UK.
The same situation regarding contractual rights to bank holiday applies like it did with the recent bank holidays for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Jubilee and State Funeral…
Your employees may be entitled to receive the additional bank holiday, depending on the wording of the employee’s contract of employment, see below:
- Employees are entitled to the extra bank holiday if their contract states: “20 days holiday plus bank holidays” or they are “entitled to all bank holidays”
- Employees are not entitled to the extra bank holiday if their contract states: “20 days holiday plus 8 bank holidays (listed, or if they are not listed you can decide which ones are included in the 8)”
- Employees are not entitled to the extra bank holiday if their contract states: “28 days or 5.6 weeks which includes bank holidays”
If employees aren’t entitled to receive the extra day, employers can still provide it as a paid holiday, or if employee’s want to take it off, they can use annual leave to cover it.
